The MS PAINT Exhibition

In 2012 award winning alternative arts organisation the Peg Powler Gallery will be celebrating the most beloved digital art package of all time - MS PAINT. In the 1990s personal computers became a common fixture in homes, schools, and offices across the world. But in an era before photoshop, broadband internet and google images there were a select few applications that brought fun and creativity to a device associated with word processing and spreadsheets. MS Paint was one of those applications.

Packaged with all Windows computers as a humble accessory, MS Paint was the super simple drawing software used in tea breaks, IT lessons and at home when the latest game wouldn't load. Using the pencil, brush, line, shape, spay paint and bucket tools - along with a cheerful 12 colour palette - everyone could create a digital doodle or a bitmap masterpiece.

Peg Powler Gallery's MS Paint Exhibition will feature new works of art created in this classic medium by a diverse selection of artists from around the world. And, [in association with The Big Draw 2012], Peg Powler Gallery are putting a call out for everybody to join in by creating and submitting their own old school Paint creations.

Anyone can be part of the project. There are no restrictions on what you choose to draw, and it can be in any style. It doesn't have to be something that has been laboured over for a long time either - in the tradition of MS Paint drawings should be fun, quick and make creative use of the tools available.

To take part just follow these guidelines:
-You must only use the original Microsoft Windows versions (1.0 to XP) of MS Paint
-Save your file as a Windows bitmap (24-bit, 256 colour, 16 colour or monochrome) and then attach it to an email along with your name, to info@pegpowler.com before the end of March 2012.

The Clip Art Exhibition in Peg Powler Gallery @ Green Dragon Studios is the world's first gallery exhibition of the clip art. On Tuesday November 22nd join iconic clip artist Arthur Clip himself for a guided tour of his greatest creations and look back over his life in the clip art-world.

Peg Powler Gallery at Green Dragon Studios present an exhibition of the drawings featured in office based software programmes since the 1990s, known as ‘Clip Art’. Familiar yet sometimes strange, this exhibition celebrates this form of pop art and also coincides with the last weeks of the Open Technology Centre’s residency in the studios (so you can check your email and send a fax while you're there!)

'Paperbugs' is an exhibition featuring festival goers and performers' drawings of Stockton International Riverside Festival - one of the most vibrant street theatre festivals on Earth - in association with the Big Draw 2011. On show at Green Dragon Studios, Stockton on Tees. Monday to Saturday all day ( early closing Thurs and Saturday)..

On September 12th Rebecca and A.J. travelled down to to the Black Heart in Camden to take part in the super-cool comedy club Lost Treasures of the Black Heart, created by our friend and all round hero Josie Long. We did a Bad Art School drawing workshop in between all the amazing comedians, with the most lovely and smart audience imaginable really going for it. On Saturday 17th of Septmeber, we did a Middlesbrough version of (our award winning art thing) A Secret History Walk - combining weird local history with drawing and exploring. Thanks to everyone who took part in the event - part of discover middlesbrough, it was a really nice day.

Join Rebecca and AJ of Peg Powler Gallery as the award winning 'Secret History Walk' comes to old boro. A creative guided tour where we visit sites of strange stories and scenes from the town's past, drawing them to life. All drawing materials provided and all levels of drawing abilitly welcome.
There will be two walks, one at 11am and one at 2pm, both on Saturday the 17th of September.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our drawing project - 'Paperbugs' over Stockton International Riverside Festival! We were thrilled to see how many drawing booklets were returned. We hope you had a fantastic time. If you were unable to post your drawings or forgot- you can still email them to us at info@pegpowler.com.

A selection of your drawings have been chosen to feature in a small exhibition in The Green Dragon Studios (where Stockton Library's Open Technology Centre is located). This space is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9am-6.45pm and Thursday/Saturday 9am-4.45pm. From Febraury to April 2011 the Peg Powler Gallery presented a series of exhibitions and events in ARC, Stockton Arts Centre including a large scale show by painter, former Pink Grease member and genlteman Stuart Faulkner. At our event 'Man to Man with Stuart Faulkner' in April Stuart took part in an chat show style interview conducted by James Harris and then took to the stage with fellow artist Dan Pencavel for the special debut perfomance of Blobby Band, performing classic tracks and taking requests, Blobby style.

Writers’ Block and Apples and Snakes will host a series of one hour challenges at Writers’ Block. These will include ‘Make a sketch in an hour’, ‘Make a performance poem in an hour’, ‘Make a zine in an hour’, ‘Make a play in an hour’ and ‘Make a (short) novel in an hour’. Each challenge will be led by an experienced team leader – including Rebecca Little and AJ Garrett from the Peg Powler gallery, Andy Berriman from Hoist the Rag, performance poet Poetry Jack and up-and-coming writer/director Jamie Jackson, who has directed plays at Theatre Royal, Northern Stage and the Gala Theatre - and we’d like as many people as possible to turn out and take part – before the results are presented at Blu Bar as part of the evening showcase!

An afternoon of fun, games and creativity with the finest tea and cake included.

In honour of upcoming theatrical show 'A Night on the Tiles', ARC present a combination of Scrabble, art and traditional cream tea.

Take part in speed scrabble tournament, a fast and loose version of the classic game.

Plus be part of 'Tile Tales': super-informal workshop with writing group Writers' Block North East and art group Peg Powler. Use scrabble boards and the the words generated by the games to stimulate and create works of art that will form part of a mini exhibition in ARC. No drawing or writing experience necessary to take part!

Old school scrabble and the chance to drink tea, eat cakes and mess about also feature.

An informal question and answer session with artists involved in Peg Powler + ARC over a light brunch. Peg Powler + ARC is a three month programme of events taking place on ARC's dedicated arts space on the second floor, bringing a full and diverse range of visual art, including underground and alternative art, to this public art centre at the centre of the community.

People are invited to join curators AJ and Rebecca and several of the artists involved in the project for a casual Q&A over coffee and croissant etc. This event is FREE, and although there are limited numbers for the actual brunch, anyone can attend and there is always the cafe downstairs if anyone needs more sustenance.

We will be working alongside the residents of the care home to produce drawings and images which reflect characters from traditional local folklore, to more personal characters from past memories.

Bad Art workshops, devised by Peg Powler Gallery co-founder AJ Garrett, are all about exploring the good things about crude drawing and putting the fun back into art in a relaxed and supportive environment.

For our current exhibition, The Peg Powler Summer Show, Peg Powler Gallery is taking place on floor one of ARC for the very fist time and running until the end of August. As a mobile art gallery, we are delighted to be in such a vibrant public and cultural space. Our second group show presents a diverse display of the creative efforts of artists Peg Powler knows and loves - an alternative view of the local art scene and taste of what can be expected from Peg Powler Gallery. The show includes dedicated artists who work from home, who don't necessarily have studios or art degrees, but whose art is engaging and individual. Danielle Velterelle's photography combines the experimental and the personal. Kingsley Chapman has used old toys to produce a joyfully strange sculpture. And Middlesborough's outsider artist Shaun Elliot produces jittery cubist drawings informed by his unique personality. Plus stills from up-coming art film Cement Factory, Rebecca Little's zoo architecture illustrations and a painting by Middlesbrough underground artist Vicky Duffy.

Peg Powler Gallery is always about more than just art on walls, so for the full experience come down to one of our open events throughout August where you will be able to have a leisurely guided tour, check out special exhibits that are not on show during the rest of the week, look through our library of art books and small press comics and zines, draw, meet people ,drink cups of tea and be creative. Audrey's paintings are both strange and stylish with touches of LA Lowbrow, pop surrealism and underground art. All ready building up a cult following early in her art career, this will be Audrey's first solo show.

3pm - Rob Nichols, the creator and publisher of award winning boro fanzine Fly Me to The Moon and a maker of zines on sport, music and humour for 20 years will perform a reading then answer questions of the perils and peaks of DIY publishing.

Drawings from an ongoing project where varied people are encouraged to perish all neurotic concepts such as drawing 'well' or 'right' or in 'good taste'. Drawing with markers and crayons on white paper under strict and strange conditions, everyone is equal and there is no room for finesse or fine technique, but pictures emerge that are fun, unique, sometimes disturbing and with more character and vibrancy and personality than so much cold, vague academic art that comes out of formal institutions.

The Bad Art Show opens MONDAY FEBRUARY 1ST 6PM - 9PM and is open to the public every Monday from 6pm - 9pm and by appointment.
